The Jewelust Stone Guide
Natural Diamond, Lab Diamond,
Moissanite or CZ?
The honest, no-pressure guide to choosing your perfect stone
One of the most common questions I hear in my studio is also one of the most loaded: "Should we get a real diamond?" The honest answer? You should get what fits your lifestyle and budget.
Whether you're deep in engagement ring research at midnight or just starting to think about it, the stone conversation can feel overwhelming fast. Natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, moissanite, cubic zirconia — they all look beautiful, but they are quite different, and those differences matter when you're choosing something you'll wear every day for the rest of your life.
At Jewelust, I work with all of these options and help couples find the stone that fits their lifestyle, their values, and their budget — without any judgment. So here's my honest breakdown.
Meet the StonesThe Four Contenders
Option 01
Natural Diamond
Formed deep within the earth over billions of years, mined, cut, and graded. The traditional choice — and still the hardest substance on earth.
Option 02
Lab-Grown Diamond
Chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond — just grown in a controlled lab environment in weeks rather than billions of years.
Option 03
Moissanite
Originally discovered in a meteorite crater in 1893. Now lab-grown from silicon carbide, moissanite is not a diamond — but it's stunning in its own right.
Option 04
Cubic Zirconia
A lab-created synthetic stone made from zirconium dioxide. Beautifully bright and very affordable — best suited to fashion jewellery or as a placeholder stone.
The BreakdownHow They Compare
Here's where things get practical. When you're choosing a stone for an engagement ring — something worn every day, for decades — these five factors matter most.
| Spec | Natural Diamond | Lab Diamond | Moissanite | Cubic Zirconia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hardness (Mohs) | 10 / 10 | 10 / 10 | 9.25 / 10 | 8–8.5 / 10 |
| Durability | Exceptional — lifetime wear | Exceptional — lifetime wear | Excellent — daily wear | Moderate — scratches & clouds over time |
| Sparkle Type | Bright white brilliance | Bright white brilliance | Intense rainbow fire | Glassy white flash, fades over time |
| Colour | D–Z graded; varies widely | D–Z graded; typically excellent | Near-colourless to slightly warm | Completely colourless when new |
| Price (1 carat est.) | $4,000–$15,000+ | $800–$1,500 | $200–$800 | $20–$100 |
| Resale Value | Holds value well | Declining market value | Low | Minimal |
| Ethical Sourcing | Varies; ask for certification | Conflict-free by nature | Conflict-free by nature | Conflict-free by nature |
| Best For | Heirloom, tradition, investment | Diamond look, better value, ethics | Maximum sparkle, budget friendly | Fashion jewellery, placeholder rings |
Let's Go DeeperThe Details That Actually Matter
On Hardness & Durability
Hardness is everything for a ring you wear while washing dishes, gardening, and generally living your life. Natural and lab-grown diamonds score a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale — the hardest substance on earth — which means virtually nothing will scratch them. Moissanite comes in at 9.25, which is excellent for daily wear. Cubic zirconia, at 8 to 8.5, is where things get more complicated: it tends to scratch and cloud over time, losing the brilliance that attracted you to it in the first place.
On Sparkle — and Why They Don't All Sparkle the Same
This is where it gets really interesting. Diamonds (natural and lab) produce what's called brilliance — that sparkle that we all love. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which means it actually bends light more dramatically, producing intense rainbow flashes of colour sometimes called "fire." It's dazzling — though some people love it and others find it a touch flashy compared to diamond's fire. Cubic zirconia can look gorgeous when new, but its lower refractive index means it doesn't interact with light as richly, and its sparkle diminishes with wear.
The right stone isn't the most expensive one — it's the one that still makes you smile every time the light catches it, twenty years from now.
On Colour
Natural diamonds are graded on a D–Z colour scale (from colourless to fancy coloured), and colour variation can significantly affect price. Lab-grown diamonds follow the same grading system and tend to offer excellent colour at lower cost. Moissanite is almost always produced to appear near-colourless, though some stones have a slight warmth in certain lighting. Cubic zirconia can be made completely colourless — which sounds like a win, but that perfect, glassy colourlessness can actually read as artificial.
On Price — and What You're Actually Paying For
The price range here is dramatic. A one-carat natural diamond can run anywhere from $4,000 to well over $15,000 depending on cut, colour, and clarity. A lab-grown diamond of comparable quality typically comes in between $800 and $1,500 — a meaningful difference. Moissanite stretches your budget further still, ranging from $200 to $800 for a one-carat stone, meaning you can get a stunning, larger stone and invest more in the ring itself. Cubic zirconia is very inexpensive, but it's worth being realistic: it's a fashion stone, not a lifetime stone.
At Jewelust, I believe your budget is yours to decide. More spend doesn't mean more love — but it does mean different things in terms of longevity and what the stone means to you personally.
The Bottom LineWhich Stone is Right for You?
Choose Natural Diamond if…
Tradition and origin matter to you. You love the idea of something billions of years old on your finger, and you're looking for a stone with long-term heirloom value.
Choose Lab-Grown Diamond if…
You want a real diamond — identical in every way — but with better value and a clearer ethical story. Ideal for maximising size and quality within a budget.
Choose Moissanite if…
You love serious sparkle, want excellent durability, and want to invest your budget in a beautiful setting or larger stone. A truly brilliant choice in every sense.
Choose Cubic Zirconia if…
You want a placeholder while you save, or you're looking for a fashion ring rather than a forever ring. Beautiful for what it is — just not built for a lifetime of daily wear.
The most important thing? Don't let anyone — including the internet — tell you what your ring should be. I've set moissanite for clients who could have bought diamonds and diamonds for clients working with careful budgets. The stone that's right is the one that fits your life.
Common QuestionsAsked & Answered
Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes, absolutely. A lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond. The only difference is its origin — one was formed underground over billions of years, the other in a controlled laboratory environment. Both are real diamonds and both can be GIA-certified.
Can you tell the difference between moissanite and diamond?
To the naked eye, most people cannot — especially in photos. The key difference becomes visible in certain lighting where moissanite's rainbow fire is more dramatic than diamond's brilliance. Jewellers can distinguish them with specialised tools, but the average person looking at your ring won't be able to tell.
Is cubic zirconia good for an engagement ring?
It depends on your intention. CZ is a beautiful and affordable stone but it scratches and clouds over time with daily wear, typically showing signs of dulling within a year or two. It's a great choice as a placeholder ring while you save, or as a travel ring — but for a forever piece, moissanite or diamond will hold up far better over decades.
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Lab-grown diamond prices have dropped significantly in recent years as production has scaled, which means resale value is lower than natural diamonds. If resale or investment value matters to you, natural diamonds tend to hold value better. If you're buying a ring to wear and love rather than as a financial investment, lab-grown diamonds offer exceptional quality at a better price point.
Can you set moissanite in gold?
Absolutely — moissanite sets beautifully in yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. At Jewelust, we work with recycled gold in a variety of karats and would love to help you design a moissanite ring that feels entirely custom and uniquely yours.
