“I don’t see colour.”

This painful statement makes colour disappear. It makes race disappear.

It makes racism invisible.

Used to prevent horses from being spooked, blinders narrow the horse’s vision, limiting sight to what is directly in front of it—and hiding everything else. In horse racing, they prevent horses from noticing other horses or riders.

When we wear “Colour Blinders”, we eliminate racism from our sight. And in doing so, we absolve ourselves of the responsibility to address it.
